Cumberland Valley students, parents gather to address drug epidemic

abc27

From ABC27.com: The Byrnes Health Education Center held its Drugs 101 awareness program at Cumberland Valley High School on Tuesday evening.

The effort is designed to raise awareness for parents and students alike, focusing on what children are facing, including peer pressure to use drugs.

Parents also got a chance to take a close look at a mock bedroom of a teenager filled with drug and alcohol paraphernalia.

Jennifer Weigle is the district’s school social worker. She organized the event and says the timing is right.

“We are seeing a lot of overdoses,” Weigle said. “We have to educate our entire community on the problem that has turned into an epidemic.”

Parents had an opportunity to watch role playing that demonstrates how parents can initiate conversations with their children if they suspect that they are using drugs.

Students took part in work stations that focused on the impact that drug use and addiction can have on individuals and their families.

At the end of the session, participants listened to parents who lost loved ones to drug addiction.
