I am going to challenge all of you fit and wanna-be-fit people out there.
It’s the new year and the perfect time to commit to a healthier you! However, every new year brings the same cycle. All you gym rats are shuffling into the gym, ticked off because the only thing harder to find than a parking space is going to be an open treadmill, and you know when you do find one, somebody will be making sure you don’t go over your 30 minutes. It plays out the same way year after year. Eventually, the gym rats will have shamed the newbies into buying DIY Insanity DVDs and facing another year of baggy shirts on the beach.
I admit, I was there. I dreaded the January crush at the gym and flaunted my weight machine prowess while name dropping and eye rolling with the trainers from the front row of the body pump class. If this is the year, month, week, day and time that you have decided to march your butt into the gym to sign up, here are some things to remember. The fitter and healthier you get the more confident you will feel. Walk up to the buff person, compliment them and ask them for advice. You would be amazed how interested they can be in sharing their success (especially those of us over 50 – wow! are we easy to flatter!). Know that you are going to trip, sweat and maybe even barf but this time next year you could be that person with great arms giving the newbies advice.
Did you hear that gym snobs? We all had to start somewhere. How great would it feel to have someone approach you to tell you they have ab envy and ask for your help. Be a mentor and share your struggles. Most of all smile and be welcoming. Healthy living is something we should wish for everyone. Your attitude might just be the reason someone gets back on the fitness track. Don’t sneer, cheer! Let them know you understand. Be inspiring while perspiring!
